Standard Coupy Pencils have been a staple of Japanese classrooms since the 1970s, but the original round barrel assumes a grip strength that toddlers simply do not yet have. SAKURA developed the Triangle Coupy Pencil specifically for children aged 2 to 3, who are still building the fine motor control needed for drawing and writing.

The three flat sides of the barrel solve two problems at once: they prevent the pencil from rolling off surfaces, and they naturally guide small fingers into a proper tripod grip without any instruction needed. The thicker diameter makes it easier to hold even when a child's hand is not yet fully coordinated.

Because the entire stick is the pigment core, there is no wooden casing to splinter, no paint layer to peel, and nothing to sharpen. The formulation is also designed so that the body and colored surfaces stay dry to the touch, so drawing sessions do not end with pigment-covered palms. The snap-closure soft case was chosen because children under 3 can operate it independently, giving them a small but real sense of ownership over their art supplies.
